Chutney Chicken AKA Granny’s Chicken Recipe

This is a family favourite. This recipe was handed down to my mother from my gran.  It brings back so many memories of my childhood every time I eat it.

  • 1 whole chicken jointed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ½ cup chutney peach chutney is the best
  • 1 splash Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 sachet brown onion soup


  • Preheat oven to 180°C
  • On the stove, brown the chicken in the oil, skin down, till the skin is nicely browned
  • Mix the water, mayonnaise, chutney, Worcestershire sauce and brown onion soup
  • Place the chicken, skin up, in an oven proof dish and pour the mayo mixture over the chicken
  • Place in the oven for approx 30 minutes, till the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through
  • Serve with rice and vegetables of your choice
  • The thickened sauce can be used as gravy
